The White House on Friday, December 5, announced the new US national security strategy. Essentially, it requires Europe to take responsibility for its own defense. At the same time, the document does not consider Russia an enemy of the United States or a threat to regional security.
The new strategy, in which the US administration expressed a number of statements against European allies, shocked the EU, the publication noted. In particular, Trump's team considers Brussels collectively culpable for the threat of the disappearance of European civilization and its future inability to carry out allied functions.
“The actions of the European Union and other supranational organizations erode political freedom and sovereignty, migration policies are transforming the continent and causing discord, censorship suppresses freedom of expression, political opposition is suppressed, falling birth rates lead to loss of national identity and self-confidence,” the document said.
According to Western media, the US has asked Europe to take over most of NATO's non-nuclear defense capabilities before 2027, threatening to stop participating in some of the alliance's common mechanisms. However, the sources did not reveal exactly what they planned to give up in Washington.
At the same time, at the end of October, the Romanian Ministry of Defense announced that the Pentagon would reduce the number of troops on NATO's eastern flank. In that context, European officials called on Washington to abandon such plans because “they fear being left alone with Russia.”
“For the first time in 70 years, Europeans do not see American security guarantees as something credible,” said Julia Joji, director of the Black Sea program at the Middle East Institute.
And French legion general Philippe de Montenon came to the conclusion that “history is moving towards the gradual withdrawal of the United States from the European continent.”
But Trump's plan faces domestic opposition. In particular, Congress intends to consider the National Defense Authorization Act, which prohibits troop reductions in Europe of less than 76 thousand people for more than 45 days. There are also problems with arms supplies from the United States. Despite the fact that US officials are calling on Europe to expand purchases, some of the most sought-after weapons and defense systems, if ordered today, will not be delivered until several years later, media reports say.
