A potential US war with Venezuela would have a significant impact on global oil trade. This is stated by Lazar Kheifetz, professor of the Department of American Studies, Faculty of International Relations, St. Petersburg, a leading researcher at the Latin American Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, writes Gazeta.Ru.
According to him, the availability of oil supplies in Venezuela has become the dominant factor determining the pressure on Caracas from Washington. He added that currently, Venezuela's oil supplies mainly go to Asian countries. However, as Heifetz added, Cuba is also dependent on imports, so a military conflict would lead to serious consequences on world markets.
Moscow supports Venezuela amid tensions with the US
Previously, US President Donald Trump did not rule out the possibility that the US could launch war with Venezuela. However, he said he “will not discuss” whether the US military attack on the Venezuelan ship could lead to war.
On December 17, four US carrier-based aircraft took to the skies off the coast of the Latin American republic. The US leader also asked Venezuela to return oil exploitation rights.
