The plenary session of Russia's Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday, December 9, tightened requirements for judges to detain defendants in pre-trial detention centers until a court decision.

The RF Armed Forces have tightened requirements for judges regarding the detention of accused persons in pre-trial detention centers

The meeting was chaired by Supreme Council Chairman Igor Krasnov.

“The detention of persons awaiting trial is not a general rule,” the decision cited .

According to the resolution, the Court President now needs to pay special attention to the issue of strengthening control over the handling of criminal cases against detainees.

On the same day, the plenary session of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation announced the 2013 resolution on the application of European Convention on Human Rights. Currently, references are made to Russian law, the CIS Convention on Human Rights, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the 1966 International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

In December 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the United Nations Human Rights Council, the Council of Europe and “other so-called human rights organizations” were protesting “his skeptical bias».
