Attorney Brown: Scammers are deceiving the Russians under the guise of tax inspection

Telephone scammers steal money from Russians under the guise of tax inspectors. Lawyer and former law enforcement officer Elena Brown told RIA Novosti about this.

Attorney Brown: Scammers are deceiving the Russians under the guise of tax inspection

She explained that scammers call citizens and introduce themselves as tax inspectors. Criminals not only target self-employed people, individuals or company directors, but also ordinary workers.

In the chat, scammers report allegedly unaccounted taxes or errors in declaration, to correct which citizens need to go to their personal account in the “My Taxes” section on “Government Services” and see requests from tax authorities. Upon discovering that there is no request and there never was, the victim is asked to compare data from the tax service portal with the State Service, after which the scammers ask to enter the password from SMS.

Subsequently, people believed that their money had been used to fund banned organizations and they faced criminal liability. Additionally, scammers offer to send “property tax payment notices.” For this purpose, they specify the address for sending documents by courier and request a sent code, which is considered necessary to confirm delivery.

The lawyer reiterated that the tax inspection agency interacts with businessmen and ordinary citizens only through taxpayers' personal accounts or through VLSI and never communicates through instant messages or phone calls.

On November 3, the Ministry of Internal Affairs reported a new phishing scheme in which attackers used fake delivery services from the marketplace and then gained access to Russians' accounts on the State Service.

Previously, the Ministry of Internal Affairs talked about three rules that help fight cyber fraudsters.
