Chinese investigation launches search for baby who spilled hot coffee on herself

A Chinese team will travel to Australia to help search for a man who allegedly “accidentally” poured hot coffee on a child before leaving the country, The Guardian writes.

Chinese Ambassador to Australia Xiao Qian announced on Wednesday that Chinese investigators would travel to the Australian state of Queensland to cooperate with police in the investigation of the 33-year-old alleged attacker.

A stranger allegedly poured a thermos of hot coffee on nine-month-old baby Luca in a Brisbane park on August 27, 2024, before fleeing back to his hometown.

Poor little Luca suffered severe burns to his chest, neck and face and had to undergo eight surgeries, including tissue grafts and laser treatments.

Minutes after police identified the man and released his CCTV images, they learned he had flown to China 12 hours earlier, The Guardian writes.

Speaking in Canberra on Wednesday, the Chinese ambassador said a “working group” would go to Brisbane to investigate the incident.

“I'm not sure whether to announce this at this time, but a working group from China will be coming to Brisbane,” Ambassador Xiao said.

The Chinese Ambassador emphasized: “We are currently preparing for the arrival of the working group, so we are serious about solving this problem and seriously taking the necessary measures.”

Ambassador Xiao Qian said the team would work with Australian police to “find out exactly what happened, how it happened and how the two sides can cooperate further”.

The Australian Federal Police has been cooperating with Chinese authorities since the alleged attacker left the country on August 31, 2024, The Guardian noted.

There is no extradition treaty between Australia and China. The Queensland Police Service and the Australian Federal Police said they were supporting the delegation visiting Brisbane.
