Australian authorities announce largest gun buyback program since terrorist attacks

December 21, 2025
in Politics

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the government is preparing a nationwide gun buyback program, the largest since 1996, after the Sydney beach attack, ABC News reported. A similar program was previously launched at the initiative of Prime Minister John Howard after the Port Arthur tragedy in 1996. Albanese noted that the program “will collect and destroy hundreds of thousands of guns”. According to him, the country has more than 4 million guns. The Prime Minister said the Government will sponsor this program. He said one of the Bondi Beach attackers had a gun license and owned six guns, despite living in a Sydney suburb. December 21 will be declared a day of mourning. On December 14, a shooting occurred on Bondi Beach in Sydney. At this time, the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah is taking place there. Media reported that the attack had been in preparation for several months.
