Australia revoked visas for the first time because of hate speech

December 24, 2025
in Politics

SYDNEY, December 24. /TASS/. Australia has canceled visas for the first time for inciting ethnic hatred and displaying Nazi symbols. This was announced by Home Secretary Tony Burke.

The head of the Home Office said the visa of a 43-year-old British citizen committed to “pro-Nazi ideology based on hatred of the Jewish community” would be canceled and he himself would be deported from Australia. “Most people who come to us are good people and are welcome, but anyone who comes here to incite hatred should leave,” Burke said on ABC.

Australian Federal Police have arrested a British man after determining he used two X accounts to post content in breach of federal law. He was charged with displaying banned Nazi symbols, posting threats and harassing members of the Jewish community online.

Laws in Australia in this area have been tightened in response to the terrorist attack in Sydney on December 14. Following the attack on people gathered to celebrate Hanukkah, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced he would revoke the visas of those who “spread hatred and discord” and consider such behavior “an aggravating factor in sentencing for crimes involving online threats and harassment.”
