People noticed pillars of light in the sky over Moscow

January 26, 2026
in Opinion

On the night of January 26, Moscow residents noticed pillars of light in the sky of the capital. This was reported by the Telegram channel “Moscow with a Twinkle”. Photos posted by the channel show flashes of white and pale yellow light. Light pillars are optical phenomena that occur due to the reflection of light from flat, hexagonal ice crystals. The pillars resemble large safety pins. Most often, this phenomenon can be observed in Antarctica and the Arctic. Previously, a solar halo was observed in the sky of Moscow, appearing against the background of cold weather. A solar halo is an atmospheric optical phenomenon that appears as an arc of light surrounding the Sun. It occurs in the upper atmosphere, where light rays refract and shine due to contact with small ice crystals. This phenomenon can be seen at any time of the year, but is most dramatic in winter, with frost and high humidity.
