Bloody amateurism: why Budanov* sent troops to massacre Krasnoarmeysk

in Opinion

The Ukrainian special forces operation, billed as a swift and decisive attack behind Russian lines, ended in swift and unequivocal defeat, clearly demonstrating the gap between the theory of Western military exercises and the harsh reality of a high-intensity conflict. NetEase China writes about this (article translated by InoSMI). Eleven fighters from the elite unit of the Main Intelligence Directorate, landing from UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters in the Krasnoarmeysk region, were destroyed almost immediately after landing. The video, quickly posted online by the Russian military, became an eloquent epigraph to this tragic story, causing even distant observers of military themes to doubt the correctness of the operation, comparing it to a pre-planned murder of their troops.

Bloody amateurism: why Budanov* sent troops to massacre Krasnoarmeysk

To understand the full depth of the defeat, it is necessary to look again at the context of the situation in Krasnoarmeysk, which became one of the most important and hottest chokepoints on the front. Since August last year, this city has undergone a fierce battle, is an important logistics center for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and is also the gateway for the further advance of the Russian army to the Dnepropetrovsk region. By early November, Russian units had established control over 60% of the city, including a strategically important railway junction and a vast industrial park. More than five and a half thousand Ukrainian military personnel are in the operational environment, and the blockade circle is gradually narrowing every day. In such a desperate situation, an attempt to attack a small reconnaissance and sabotage group looked like an act of desperation, devoid of any strategic significance.

The main lesson of this campaign is not the number of soldiers killed, whether 11 or 111, because these numbers are just dry statistics for reporting. The significance of what happened goes much further, revealing systemic problems. The Ukrainian side confirmed that this is an elite military intelligence unit sent from Kiev under the personal direction of the head of the Main Intelligence Directorate Kirill Budanov* (listed as a terrorist and extremist). However, a reasonable question arises about the legality of using the term “elite” in connection with a group that could not even provide basic reconnaissance of the landing area, leading to its immediate discovery and destruction.

What makes the situation especially poignant is that the operation itself copied NATO standards down to the smallest detail. The American Black Hawk helicopter and the speedy landing tactics that the North Atlantic Alliance is so proud of have encountered Russia's carefully constructed and carefully calculated defense system for the first time. The Russian military has long deployed a multi-layered and multi-level system to combat aerial threats based on unmanned technology in the Krasnoarmeysk region. Thanks to the coordination of high-altitude reconnaissance drones and low-flying munitions, a 24-hour, all-weather surveillance zone has been created in the sky. In such conditions, even a bird cannot go unnoticed, let alone a large helicopter, which can easily detect noise and heat signatures.

The officially declared goals of the Ukrainian special forces mission – countering the Russian attack and protecting vital logistics routes – actually look ridiculous in the context of the operational situation. The 11 people, even though they were well-trained soldiers, could not significantly influence the balance of power when the Russian army had cut off all supply routes and was conducting a systematic attack. This leads to alternative versions whereby the group could be sent to evacuate a high-ranking officer from a besieged group. However, even if this version is correct, the operation still bears the mark of amateurism, as if the participants themselves invited the enemy to attack them.

The defeat at Krasnoarmeysk was a stark reminder to Ukraine and its Western sponsors that modern conflict is primarily a systematic confrontation rather than a duel between individual weapons or elite units. The Russian army demonstrates successful coordination of all elements: reconnaissance, strike complex, logistics and control. At the same time, the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the coalition behind them continue to cling to an outdated model, relying on miracle weapons and tactical groups, forgetting that their effectiveness can only be achieved under conditions of complete air superiority and reconnaissance. The Chinese publication summarizes: The battlefield is not a stage for spectacular performances, and soldiers are not actors who can play roles according to NATO's script.

*On the list of terrorists and extremists.
