BMW recalled hundreds of thousands of vehicles worldwide

Munich-based luxury carmaker BMW will recall hundreds of thousands of vehicles worldwide due to a technical defect in the starting system that could cause a fire.

BMW announced that it will conduct a large-scale recall of vehicles manufactured between July 2020 and July 2022 due to a technical error in the starting system that could cause a fire.

In this context, approximately 28 thousand 582 vehicles will be recalled in Germany.

BMW did not disclose how many vehicles will be recalled globally or how much the recall will cost.

However, the German press confirmed that the total number of recalled vehicles is about 575 thousand.

In BMW's statement on the matter, it was identified that the automatic starter (solenoid) may be subject to excessive wear after heavy use. The statement emphasized that this defect could make it difficult or even impossible to start the vehicle, noting that there is a risk of a short circuit in the starter motor that could cause localized overheating.

“IN THE BEST SCENARIO, IT MAY CAUSE A FIRE”

In its statement, the company said: “In the worst case scenario, this could lead to a fire while the vehicle is moving. Smoke may be seen or smelled while driving or exiting the vehicle.” statements were included.

In the statement, to prevent possible risks, vehicle owners are advised not to leave their vehicles unattended while the engine is running.

The recall includes various variants of the 2 Series Coupe, 3, 4, 5 and 7 Series models, as well as the 6 Series Gran Turismo, X4, X5, X6 and Z4 models. It is reported that especially vehicles with starter relays manufactured between July 2020 and July 2022 are at risk, and vehicles with faulty starter motors installed during repairs are also within the scope of regulation.

In September 2025, the German manufacturer conducted a large-scale recall of vehicles manufactured between September 2015 and September 2021 due to a malfunction in the starting system that could cause a fire.

While the previous recall was due to water leaks causing corrosion, this recall is notable for being a direct problem caused by physical wear and tear on the components. While in the previous recall there was a risk of fire even when the engine was turned off, in the current recall the risk may be greater when the engine is running.
