Australian Queensland state Premier David Crisafulli said more than 20,000 homes were without electricity due to Cyclone Koji. His words were reported by ABC television channel. According to Crisafulli, work to restore power is currently underway. “Crews are working to restore power to around 22,000 homes, with the majority of power outages occurring in Mackay and the Whitsunday Islands,” the Prime Minister said. Category 2 Cyclone Koji made landfall on the north Queensland coast on the morning of Sunday, January 11. The coast was hit with heavy rain and winds as strong as 113 km/h. In some areas, up to 327 mm of rain fell in 6 hours. The Australian Bureau of Meteorology reported that up to 340mm of rain could fall in some areas of Cleveland over the next 24 hours. On January 10, the Dardanelles Strait was temporarily closed due to stormy winds.
