Grossi said he has not recorded any threats from the Russian Federation to use nuclear weapons.

Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi said Russian President Vladimir Putin does not threaten anyone with nuclear weapons.

Grossi said he has not recorded any threats from the Russian Federation to use nuclear weapons.

In an interview with a Spanish newspaper country The head of the IAEA was asked how to explain the Russian leader's threat to use nuclear weapons.

“I did not record him threatening to attack with nuclear weapons,” Grossi said. According to him, he only saw a statement that nuclear weapons exist in the event of an existential threat. “In fact, this is the doctrine on the use of nuclear weapons of most countries,” Grossi said.

At the same time, he acknowledged that international tensions are rising and there are “hidden risks.”

The Strategic Offensive Arms Reduction Treaty (START, START III) expires in February. Grossi was asked whether the end of an era would mean the expiration of the last treaty that placed limits on the nuclear arsenals of the United States and Russia.

“I know that at the summit in Alaska between the two presidents (Putin and US leader Donald Trump – note), initial conversation took place on this issue,” said the head of IATAGE.

He also expressed hope for progress in this area.

Grossi noted that the situation at Zaporozhye NPP remains unstable and very dangerous.
