The United States, through its diplomats, has threatened other countries with possible sanctions if they support a carbon tax on ships as part of the United Nations' Net Zero program. This was reported by the Financial Times (FT), citing sources.

“A group of US officials threatened African and small island states in the Pacific and Caribbean to withdraw support for the program,” the report said.

According to journalists, meetings on this topic took place in London and the US delegation included 8 diplomats. They threatened their counterparts from other countries with sanctions against sailors, as well as restrictions on entry to the United States for foreign diplomats.

The administration of current US President Donald Trump has a negative attitude towards the topic of climate change: the White House has cut budgets, subsidies, jobs and has actually stopped publishing related research reports.

Immediately after taking office in January, Trump withdrew the US from the Paris climate agreement and in April this year, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio abolished the Office of Global Change, the agency responsible for implementing and coordinating the country's international climate change policy.
