ABC News reported that a teenager was bitten by a shark while fishing off the coast of the Torres Strait Islands.

Teenager saves his friend's life by fighting him off a shark

The accident happened on Saturday, October 11, when the 14-year-old boy was fishing with friends from the jetty on Thursdee Island in northern Australia. The boy jumped into the water first and was bitten by the shark.

The teenagers realized that their friend was in trouble and immediately ran to help. They managed to pull the bleeding boy to shore, but he had lost a lot of blood and suffered life-threatening injuries to his abdomen and internal organs.

The victim was first taken to a nearby hospital and then transferred to Townsville for emergency surgery. The district mayor noted that the boy's friends showed “incredible courage” and thanked them for their timely intervention. A Townsville University Hospital spokesman said the teenager remained in a critical condition.
