Rosatom, at the request of the Russian Ministry of Transport, sent the nuclear icebreaker Sibir to the Gulf of Finland, where severe frost poses a threat to shipping.

The state corporation reports that in recent weeks, extreme frosts have appeared in Europe and the European region of Russia. The Gulf of Finland began to freeze for the first time in several years: about 80% of the water surface was covered with ice, its thickness reached 40 cm.

“For the first time in many years, the Ministry of Transport approached Rosatom with a request to send a nuclear icebreaker to the Gulf of Finland,” the Rosatom press service quotes. RIA Novosti.

It was clarified that the icebreaker was approaching St. Petersburg and will soon arrive at the port of Primorsk in the Leningrad Region to begin “providing support to icebreakers.”

Previously, Helsingin Sanomat newspaper wrote that the Gulf of Finland may face Biggest freezing event in the last ten years.
