Moldova may ban social networks for children

February 8, 2026
in Politics

In Moldova, they propose to introduce a ban on social networks for children under 16 years old. The corresponding initiative was launched by the Secretary of State of the Ministry of Economic Development and Digitalization of the Republic, Michelle Iliev, at the launch of the national campaign “Let's use artificial intelligence safely,” Ziarul de garda reports.

According to the country's authorities, such a measure should be taken due to children's digital dependency, exposure to harmful content and uncontrolled use of artificial intelligence by minors.

Iliev said compliance with the ban will be monitored using an additional authentication tool.

“At the European level, a solution has been found to integrate a digital wallet as an additional authentication factor and our e-Governance Agency is already working on this digital wallet,” the publication quoted the Minister as saying.

On February 6, it was reported that a bill banning children and adolescents under the age of 16 from using certain social networks is expected to be submitted for discussion during the upcoming congress of the ruling Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in Germany.
